Modifying your car in New Zealand? Whether you're into window tinting, wheels, exhausts, or wraps – it's important to know what’s legal (and what could fail your WOF). Here's an updated 2025 guide on NZ car modification rules, especially for Auckland drivers.
🚗 1. Window Tinting Rules (WOF Legal Limits)
-
Front side windows: Must let in at least 35% visible light (VLT)
-
Rear side & back window: No VLT limit – can be darker
-
Front windscreen: Tint strip only allowed at top, max 100mm
👉 Illegal tint may result in WOF failure or fines
🎨 2. Car Wrapping & Paint
-
Vinyl wraps are legal – even colour-changing wraps
-
If your car colour significantly changes, you must update your registration with NZTA
-
Reflective wraps not allowed on certain areas for safety
🔊 3. Exhaust & Noise Limits
-
Must meet NZTA noise regulations
-
Loud aftermarket exhausts (over 95dB) may require LVV certification
-
WOF testers can fail your car if noise is excessive
🛞 4. Wheels, Tyres & Suspension
-
Custom wheels must not extend beyond the guards
-
Lowering your car? Check for minimum ground clearance: 100mm
-
Coilovers or airbags may require LVV certification
💡 5. WOF & Certification
-
Basic mods (tint, wheels, wraps) = WOF okay if within rules
-
Advanced mods (engine swap, chassis cut, airbags) = Need LVV Cert
-
Always check with an authorised certifier or garage
