One of the most common questions we get at FM7 Albany & Wairau is:
“What’s the legal limit for window tinting in New Zealand?”
It's a smart question — because getting it wrong can cost you a Warrant of Fitness (WOF), increase insurance risk, or even lead to police attention.
Here’s a clear, no-fluff guide to what’s legal, what’s not, and how FM7 keeps you compliant without sacrificing style or performance.
🚘 Front Side Windows – 35% VLT Minimum
-
Legal limit: 35% VLT or higher
(This means the film must let in at least 35% of visible light.)
These are your driver and passenger front side windows.
Go darker than 35%, and you risk failing your WOF or getting fined.
✅ FM7 uses precision-cut, certified films to match legal specs exactly.
🚘 Rear Side & Rear Window – No Limit (4X4, UTE, VAN)
-
Good news: You can go as dark as you want on rear passenger windows and the rear windshield (back glass).
Want limo tint in the back for privacy or a cooler ride? No problem — we can go full blackout legally.
This is perfect for:
-
Commercial vehicles
-
Families with kids
-
Anyone wanting privacy in the rear
🪟 Front Windshield – No Tinting Allowed, Even Clear film.
✅ What’s Allowed:
You are allowed to apply a tinted (anti-glare) band at the top of the front windscreen, but it must not extend lower than 100mm from the top edge of the windscreen.
🚫 What Happens If You Go Too Dark?
-
WOF failure
-
Police fines
-
Possible insurance claim denial if you're involved in an accident
-
Reduced night visibility, which increases accident risk
✅ FM7 Legal Tinting Includes:
-
Certified NZ-compliant film
-
WOF-safe installs
-
Limo tint options in legal areas
-
Professional recommendations for fleet, family, or luxury vehicles
