🛡️ NZTA Window Tinting Laws (2025 Update)

In New Zealand, window tinting regulations are governed by Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) — the percentage of visible light that passes through the window and any applied film.

🚘 Front Windscreen

  • Legal Limit: Must have an overall VLT of at least 70%.

  • Permitted Overlays: Only anti-glare bands are allowed, extending no lower than the bottom of the sun visors when folded against the windscreen.

  • Restrictions: No other tinting is permitted on the windscreen.

🚘 Front Side Windows (Driver and Front Passenger)

  • Legal Limit: Must have an overall VLT of at least 35%.

  • Purpose: Ensures clear visibility for the driver and compliance with safety standards.

🚘 Rear Side Windows and Rear Window

  • Class MA Vehicles (e.g., sedans, hatchbacks, station wagons, sports cars, convertibles):

    • Legal Limit: Must have an overall VLT of at least 35%.

  • Other Vehicle Classes (e.g., vans, SUVs, stretch limousines):

    • Legal Limit: No specific VLT requirement; any level of tint is permitted.

    • Additional Requirement: Must have an external rear-view mirror on each side of the vehicle.

🔍 Additional Considerations

  • Non-Transparent Overlays and Stickers:

    • Front Windscreen: Any non-transparent material must be within 100mm from the top or bottom edge, or within 50mm from the side edges.

    • Front Side Windows: Non-transparent materials must be within 100mm from the bottom edge or within 50mm from the top or side edges.

    • Rear Windows: For Class MA vehicles, non-transparent materials must be within 100mm from any edge of the window.

  • Mirrored or Reflective Films: Not permitted if they have a mirrored effect sufficient to dazzle other road users.

  • VLT Measurement Tolerance: A tolerance of 5% is permitted to account for variations in tint film and light meters.
